Edu-Blog: Teaching Your Cat To Love Their Carrier

If your furry friend bolts under the bed the second the carrier comes out, you’re not alone. Most cats only see their carrier when it’s time for the vet or a long trip, making it a source of stress. But with a little patience and creativity, you can turn that scary box into your cat’s personal safe haven.

Make the carrier part of the furniture

Leave the carrier out in a cozy corner where your cat already likes to hang out. Prop the door open, add a soft blanket and toss in a favorite toy. You can even spray it with a calming pheromone product to make it more inviting.

The way to a cat’s heart is through their stomach

Start feeding your cat near the carrier, then move the bowl closer each day until it’s inside. Over time, your cat will happily walk into the carrier to eat. Keep feeding meals in the carrier even when you’re not traveling so your cat’s good feelings stick.

Sprinkle in surprise treats and they’ll learn to check the carrier just in case something tasty is waiting.

Practice mini “trips”

Once your cat is comfortable eating inside, gently close the door while they’re snacking. Keep sessions short and positive. Then practice carrying the carrier around the house. Reward your cat after every “ride” with treats or a play session.

Travel day tip

Cover the carrier with a blanket for security, and never open it until you’re safely indoors at your destination.

With time, the carrier won’t just be something your cat dreads and fears. It will become a cozy, familiar retreat. And that means fewer stressful vet visits, easier emergency prep, and a happier, more confident cat.
