Volunteer FAQ

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

You must be at least 17 (16 with an interview) to volunteer in the shelter. For those under 17, we recommend discussing fostering with your family.

How do I become a volunteer?

Your first step is to fill out a Volunteer Interest Form. After we get a chance to review your interest form, you will receive an invitation to join us at our next volunteer information session, where you will learn more about our volunteer jobs and responsibilities. We then evaluate your needs and preferences with our current openings and try to find an appropriate position for you.

I received an invite to the information session, but I have a schedule conflict for that date. What now?

We hold information sessions at least once a month. If you cannot attend the first available date we will email you with the next date as soon as it is set. You can also check our Upcoming Information Session dates on our Volunteer webpage.

What’s the time commitment?

We ask our volunteers to commit to at least one two-hour shift per week for a minimum of three months. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for more shifts and are encouraged to volunteer beyond their three month initial requirement. We ask that volunteers review the attendance policy in our handbook for more information.

What if I have a vacation where I will have to miss a shift?

Email us at volunteer@seattleareafelinerescue.org to notify us, as soon as you know you will be missing a shift. If you are going to be gone for an extended period, we may be able to place you on a Leave of Absence from the volunteer program with proper notice.

Can I receive credit for service hours for school?

Yes. You must notify the Volunteer Coordinator in advance. You must also be at least 16 years of age. Please note that we will sign your completed service hours at the end of the three-month commitment. You must also have your hours signed at the end of your volunteer service, no more than six months after you have stopped volunteering. We ask 1 week notice for any forms to be filled out.

Can I complete my court-ordered community service hours here?

Yes. You must notify the Volunteer Coordinator in advance. Each situation is evaluated individually to ensure that this is the right program for you. Please note that we will sign your completed service hours at the end of the three-month commitment. We ask for 1 week notice for any forms to be filled out.

Do you have any group volunteer opportunities?

Occasionally we will have a large project that can utilize a group of volunteers. However group opportunities are extremely limited. Please email volunteer@seattlearefelinerescue.org if you are interested in a group opportunity.

Will I need to work holidays?

If you are a retail or administrative volunteer, you do not need to work certain holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4th). However, cats still need care on holidays so cat care volunteers and general cleaning volunteers are required to work holidays. On some of our more popular holidays we have volunteers who are willing to cover for those who will be out of town, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.
