Volunteer of the Month: Mary S.

Meet Mary

As an Adoption Counselor, Mary facilitates conversations with potential adopters, getting to know them and learning what they’re looking for in a furry family member. By the end of their chat, many will go home with a kitty (or two) thanks to Mary!

“The best part is seeing the cats and adopters connect,” Mary says. “On occasion an adopter comes in and meets just one cat. Seeing that instant bond is very special.”

Why They Volunteer

A Seattle resident of nearly 38 years, Mary has volunteered with SAFe Rescue for the past four of them.

“I believe that the act of volunteering is enriching for the person, and of course it’s a great contribution to our world,” Mary says. “It’s very rewarding to be part of the community that helps creatures that aren’t able to help themselves.”

Not only has Mary found the experience meaningful–it’s been educational, too.

“Even though I have had cats for 50 years of my life, there are still many things I didn’t know,” she tells us.

It’s not just the cats who keep Mary coming back every week. The humans who keep SAFe running are also a source of admiration for her.

“I’m continually inspired by the staff and other volunteers,” says Mary. “They are very dedicated to caring for the cats and doing what’s best for them.”

More About Mary

When she’s not at SAFe helping cats find happy homes, Mary keeps busy gardening, traveling, and taking daily 2-3 mile walks with her little dog. Most recently, she’s taken up cooking classes in hopes of becoming more adventurous in the kitchen.

But as much as she loves trying new things, Mary also enjoys her routine of weekly volunteer work. She’s become a regular fixture at SAFe, and intends to keep it that way.

“I look forward to continuing for a long time,” Mary tells us.

Thank you, Mary, for helping cats in our care find the perfect families! Your dedication ensures our feline friends find where they need to be and who they need to be with, and we are so happy to have you in our Rescue family.
